A New Chapter for Mothers and Babies in Rural Zambia May 29, 2026, marked a historic milestone for Oyate Zambia and the communities we serve as we officially launched our state-of-the-art maternity block at the Anthu Omwe Health Centre in Mungule, Chibombo District. The opening represents far more than the completion of a new building. It represents hope, dignity, safety, and a renewed commitment to protecting the lives of mothers and newborn babies in rural Zambia. For many expectant mothers living in rural communities, giving birth safely can be a major challenge. Long distances to health facilities, limited transportation, financial hardship, and inadequate maternity services can turn childbirth into a dangerous and frightening experience. No mother should have to risk her life—or the life of her baby—simply because she lives in a village. The new maternity block was established to help change that reality. Through this facility, women from Mungule and surrounding villages can now access professional maternal and newborn healthcare closer to home. The maternity block provides a clean, safe, and supportive environment where mothers can receive care throughout pregnancy, during delivery, and after childbirth. This achievement is an important step toward reducing preventable maternal and infant deaths while ensuring that every child has the opportunity to enter the world safely. The maternity block also strengthens the work of the Anthu Omwe Health Centre, which continues to provide free, quality healthcare to thousands of people in rural communities. From general consultations and laboratory testing to family planning, antenatal care, postnatal care, and health education, the centre remains committed to making healthcare accessible to those who need it most. The launch on May 29 was a celebration of what can be accomplished when compassion, partnership, and a commitment to service come together.
